Dental veneers are a thin porcelain layer that cover the outside of a patient's tooth. A patient may need or want dental veneers for a number of reasons. If you have chipped, misshapen, gapped, or yellow teeth, veneers may be the right cosmetic dental intervention for you. At Warrenton Dental Center, we have utilized dental veneers on a number of patients to enhance their smile's physical appearance, and boost confidence.
Veneers are bonded to the front of your teeth, and can change various physical aspects about a tooth. In addition, they can also protect your tooth from further decay. There are two types of dental veneers:
Porcelain Veneers
Composite Veneers
Porcelain veneers are known for their longevity. Lasting anywhere from 10 to 20 years, this dental intervention is strong and stain-resistant. However, porcelain veneers are usually permanent because part of the process when implementing porcelain veneers is scraping off some of your tooth's natural enamel. In addition, these tend to cost more than composite veneers.
Composite is another type of material veneers are often made of. While this particular type of veneer does not last as long as porcelain veneers, they cost less. They also take less time to prepare, and are easier to repair compared to porcelain veneers.
If you are trying to figure out which type of veneers are best for you, the best thing to do is talk to you dentist. During your consultation, they will outline the positives and negatives of each, and recommend one option for you. They will also be able to address any questions or concerns you may have.
Dental veneers are not for every patient. However, this could be a good solution to patients with teeth that have physical issues, and do not have too much decay/damage. If you think veneers may be the dental correction you need, consider the positive and negatives outlined below:
They improve appearance by hiding tooth imperfections.
They match the rest of your natural teeth.
They can help strengthen your tooth.
They are stain-resistant, which means you do not have to worry about coffee, wine, etc ruining them.
They can last anywhere from 10-20 years.
They require easy maintenance of routine brushing and flossing, just like the rest of your teeth.
They are costly.
They are permanent.
They can increase tooth sensitivity, since it involves removing some of your tooth's enamel.
The procedure for both porcelain and composite veneers is the same, except that composite veneers only take one appointment, while porcelain veneers take a few more. Below outlines the step-by-step process that occurs when a patient gets veneers:
Assessment. Your dentist will have a consultation with you, where he/she will outline the positives and negatives of dental veneers, as well as whether or not you are a candidate. Once it has been determined that you are a candidate, you will then have to make a decision about whether porcelain or composite are best for you.
Removing Enamel. In order for veneers to be adhered to your teeth, some of your natural enamel must be removed. Specifically, 0.5mm must be removed, which is the thickness of each veneer.
Making a Model. Your dentist will now make a model of your tooth. This will be sent to the lab, so that a custom veneer can be made to the shape, size, color, etc of your liking. It typically takes about 4 weeks to create a dental veneer, and get it back to your dentist.
Adhering the Veneer. Your dentist will begin the procedure by fitting the veneer onto your tooth. He/she will determine if it is the right color and shape, and will trim it if necessary to make sure that it fits. Then, he will clean the tooth, and adhere the veneer using a unique cement.
Post-Appointment Examination. Once your veneers have been fixed to your teeth for a few weeks, your dentist will ask you to come back in. They will then check to make sure your gums have not reacted negatively to the veneers.
Dental veneers can help to restore your smile's beauty in a way that looks natural, and does not take away from function.
